Oats with bananas, cinnamon, and the mixed in almond butter

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup oats

  • 1 cup water or milk

  • 1 tbsp almond butter

  • 1 small banana

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the water or milk to a boil

  2. Add the rolled oats and a pinch of salt

  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats are cooked and the mixture is creamy. (If using quick oats, follow the package instructions, typically around 1-3 minutes)

  4. Once the oatmeal is cooked, remove it from heat and transfer it to a bowl

  5. Stir in the almond butter until well combined

  6. Top with the banana slices and sprinkle with ground cinnamon

Discussion

Another fairly obvious recipe if I ever saw one. I’ve made plenty of oats in my life so I really didn’t need it to tell me how, but I was still curious what it would say. It basically followed the instructions on a box of Quaker Oats and then added things to it.

What I found interesting about this recipe was the almond butter. It was the first time I had ever even heard of it, let alone use it in a recipe. Got to say, not a fan. It was nuttier than expected and left a weird after taste that I didn’t enjoy.

Overall, not bad. Would fix it over the Greek yogurt recipe any day.

Calories for this meal was high, around 350 calories for it all. The 1/2 cup of oats was 150 calories, the tbsp of almond butter was 100 calories, and the small banana I guessed was around 100 calories. I didn’t use milk to cook my oats, I used water instead to keep to calories down. If I was still thinking in the calorie mindset, I probably wouldn’t eat this again due to how high it was.
